竹村延和のボッテガ・レジデンシー

ボッテガ・レジデンシーとは、ボッテガ・ヴェネタが2020年3月末にスタートさせたバーチャルプログラム。クリエイティブ・ディレクターのダニエル・リーさんはこのプロジェクトについてこう語っています。「創造性と強さはボッテガ・ヴェネタの中心にあります。この非常に厳しい時代に、私たちはそれらの価値を祝い、私たちのコミュニティ内のみならず、それらが持つ喜びや希望に火をつける責任を感じています」。ここではそこで公開された、当レーベルと関わりの深いアーティスト竹村延和へのメールインタビューを日本語と英語で掲載します。

文学

ーー好きな作家を教えてください。

大勢いますが、誰もが知ってる人で絞ればサン＝テグジュペリです。

ーーその理由は？

孤独と漲る真理への探求「聖なるもの」と「俗なるもの」の対比、哲学的で神学的な深い批判精神が彼の持ち味ですが、難解な言い回しを避け、ユーモアを交えて描くところが好きです。

ーーいつ、どのようにその作家を知りましたか？

中学生の頃、学校の先生を通じて知りました。当時はぼんやりした不思議な話という印象に留まっていました。しかし成人後、読み直し、生死についての深い哲学的な洞察や、聖書との照応に気付いたことで、自分にとって重い作品になりました。

ーー好きな作品は？

「星の王子さま」、「城砦」

ーーそれらの作品からの引用などはありますか？ また特にどんな部分に惹かれるでしょう？

創作時、特に意識しませんが、私の人格や創作世界が「星の王子さま」に近いと、これまで多くの人に指摘されてきました。それはおそらくカトリック的な色彩など類似した素材や世界観に立脚しているからかもしれません。寂しさ、子ども、聖書のモチーフなど多くの点で惹かれます。

芸術

ーー好きなアーティストを教えてください。

大勢いますが独りに絞るとパウル・クレー。

ーーその理由は？

シンプルでありながら深いところ。小さな世界に、初めのインスピレーションと霊性がそのまま活きている。どれも素朴ですが、既存のモノの再現ではなく「見えないものを描く」（Kunst gibt
nicht das Sichtbare wieder,sondern machte sichtbar.）という点で、ある種の宗教性を強く帯びています。美術と音楽が分かち難く有機的に結びついている点も魅力です。

ーーいつ、どのようにそのアーティストを知りましたか？

高校生の頃、街の図書館の美術書を観覧していて見つけました。

ーー好きな作品は？

「Seiltänzer」（1923）

ーーこの作品があなたにインスピレーションを与えたところは？

この作品（Seiltänzer）は、形而上の世界、背後の白い十字架と、文化-文明を意味するようにみえる幾何学的な建造物の上の現実で、揺れながら、慎重に精神のバランスを取っているように見えるところが好き。

ーー好きな美術館はどこでしょう？

Akademie der Künste（https://www.adk.de/）は美術のみならず、文学や哲学関係の資料も充実しています。ロケーションも良く、ベルリンに住んでいた頃、いつもここでお茶を飲んでいました。時代やタイプは全く違いますが、サンマルコ美術館Museo di San Marcoは所蔵作品が素晴らしいです。イタリアのフィレンツェは街自体が美術館のようです。

ーーおすすめしたいバーチャルな展覧会やアーカイブはありますか？

ウッフィーチ美術館（https://www.uffizi.it/en）。

映画

ーー好きな映画監督を教えてください。

故人ではアンドレイ・タルコフスキー、現役の人ではビクトル・アリセ。

ーーその理由は？

彼らの描く世界は詩的で幻想的だから。

ーーいつ、どのようにその映画監督を知りましたか？

十代の頃、ガールフレンドに教えてもらいました。

ーー好きな映画やシリーズを教えてください。

「ローラーとバイオリン　Katok i skripka 」
「鏡　еркало 」
「ミツバチのささやき　El Espiritu de la colmena 」

ーー好きなシーンを教えてください。

「ミツバチのささやき」は繰り返し観たので台詞を全て暗記しています。
寝室での姉妹の会話、線路に耳を当て汽車の接近に気付く場面。
善悪の基準を母親に聞くところが好き。フランケンシュタインの映画上映、
聖母マリア、蝋燭、火遊び、毒キノコ、井戸等、シンボルとアレゴリーが
犇めき合い、優しさと神秘の美に包まれている。

ーーなんらかの形であなたに影響を与えた脚本や作品は？

ソポクレス「Antigone」。悲劇と言語の重みについて、強い衝撃を
受けました。Hölderlin 訳のブレヒトによる作品、ストローブ＝ユイレの
映像もとても美しいと思います。


竹村延和
アーティスト／作曲家。90年代より国内外で活動する。これまで一貫して、子どもの感性をテーマに、その霊性と美を問い返すべく概念と情動の相克、意味生成と変容・分岐を音・言葉・平面・映像を交え探求している。近年は弦楽など演奏家による室内楽アンサンブルの作曲、また音を超えてイメージや言葉を用いた表現、絵画や戯曲、インスタレーション、映像などの領域に踏み込んでいる。2016年、平面作品中心の個展「Einheit」開催。音楽作品としては2012年にツジコノリコとのコラボレーション、2014年にはソロ作品『Zeitraum』を発表。現在京都在住。

LITERATURE

Who is your favorite author?

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

Tell us why.

I like his critical vision that is both philosophical and theological; and yet it is still easy to read and humorous. I especially like his way of contrasting the vulgar with the sacred, as well as his creative independence and vocation for [always trying to] understand the truth.

When and how did you discover him?

My teacher at junior high school introduced me to his work. At the time, I only thought his work was abstract and mystical. Then I rediscovered his work in my adulthood. His deeply philosophical observations about life and death, and references to the Bible left a profound impact on my way of thinking.

What is your favorite from his work?

Le Petit Prince (The Little Prince) and Citadelle (The Wisdom of the Sands)

Are there any quote or extract from his work that you particularly enjoy?

I don’t usually think about what influences my work. But many people over the years have pointed out that my characters and work possess a certain affinity for The Little Prince. I suppose that there are some Catholic influence on my work which has something to do with The Little Prince. I’m often drawn to abstract notions of childhood, solitude and the Bible.

ART 　

Who is your favorite artist?

Paul Klee.

Tell us why.

His work is naive yet profound. His initial inspiration and spirituality remains alive in the final output as if the work itself is a miniature of the world. His works are often perceived as naive. It is because his artistic premise is not to represent what exists but to see the unseeable (“Kunst gibt nicht das Sichtbare wieder, sondern machte sichtbar”). And in a way that is a form of religiousness. I also like the fact that art and musical aspect of his work are organically intertwined.

When and how did you discover him?

When I was a high school student, I found his book in a library.

What is your favorite from his work?

Seiltänzer (1923)

Is there any quote from the work that inspires you and your own work?

I like a particular tension (or harmony) in this work where a person is balancing very carefully in the world. It is the world where the metaphysical and physical are juxtaposed. That is to say: on one hand there is a giant white cross - a symbol of metaphysical world; on the other the civilization - a symbol of physical world.

What is your all-time favorite gallery/museum/art institute and why?

Akademie der Künste（https://www.adk.de/）, Berlin. It offers extensive resources for not only arts but also literature and philosophy. It’s in a middle of the city and was my favorite place for a rest and a cup of tea when I lived in Berlin. Museo Nazionale di San Marco has a wonderful collection. The city of Florence itself is like a museum.

FILM

Who is your favorite director?

Andrei Tarkovsky and Víctor Erice.

Tell us why.

The way they portray the world is profoundly poetic and magical.

When and how did you discover them?

My girlfriend in my teens introduced me to their work.

Which film or series do you like the most?

The Steamroller and the Violin by Tarkovsky
Mirror by Tarkovsky
The Spirit of the Beehive by Erice

Do you have a favorite scene?

I have watched The Spirit of the Beehive over and over. I can recall almost the entire script! I especially like the scenes where the sisters have a conversation in their bedroom, while pressing their ears to the track and feeling the train approaching, and then asking their mother about morality. Frankenstein, St. Mary, candles, fires, mushrooms, and wells… the film has a full of allegory and symbols that are unified by a kind and mysterious sense of beauty.

Is there any quote or extract from the scripts that have stayed in you in some ways?

Sophocles’s ‘ Antigone had a profound impact on me concerning the significance of tragedy and language. And the adaptations by Bertolt Brecht (based on Hölderlin's translation) and Straub-Huillet are extremely beautiful.

Nobukazu Takemura
Artist and composer. Actively producing and presenting works in Japan and internationally since the 1990s. Consistently exploring (and questioning) through sound, text, painting and film: an innocent state of mind in childhood and its creative possibility: a conflict between the logical and emotion: and creation and transformation of meaning. In recent years, Takemura has composed for string orchestras and is extending his medium to theater and installations. In 2016, he hold a solo painting-focused exhibition entitled Einheit. His recent musical output includes East Facing Balcony (2012) with artist Tsujiko Noriko and Zeitraum (2014). He currently resides in Kyoto.
